It is used for effective separation of liquid and gas coming from the evaporator so that the separated gas can enter into the compressor through suction line in order to re-unite with the liquid of evaporator for re-circulation purpose. Accumulator - Surge Drum is also used for absorption of surges caused by load variation inside evaporator.
